Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is an energy healing technique discovered by Sensei Mikao Usui in Japan in 1922 that promotes health, well-being, and relaxation through the channeling of universal life force energy. It is a gentle and soothing healing modality that involves a “laying-on-of-hands” technique on or above major and minor energy centers (i.e., chakras). Reiki is non-invasive, free of side effects, and safe to use as a complementary treatment for any ailment. 

Reiki's Role: Beyond Physical Healing

Reiki is a healing energy that helps to balance you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, so it can be a great complementary therapy for any ailment. Reiki is well known for its positive impact on stress and anxiety, pain, focus/mental clarity and overall well-being. It has also been shown to help with insomnia, overall sleep quality, and recovery from surgical procedures. 

Many hospitals are now offering Reiki to patients as a complement to their hospital care, particularly those in oncology and palliative settings, but also during and after surgeries to help patients find relaxation while undergoing stressful treatments and procedures. It can be used as a complement to psychotherapy to help process difficult or deep-rooted emotions and as an adjunct to physical therapy and rehab to optimize healing and reduce the perception of pain.

Inside a Reiki Session: Serenity & Balance

During an in-person Reiki session, you will meet with your Reiki practitioner who will ask your preference for hands-on or hands-off during your session and walk you through the different hand placements. Sessions take place in a quiet, peaceful environment. You will be invited to lay on a table (fully clothed) with a blanket provided. The Reiki practitioner will begin at your head and move down your body, gently placing their hands on or above your major and minor chakras (energy centers). These hand placements help to encourage and balance energy flow throughout the body.

During a distance Reiki session, you will be notified of the time during which your practitioner will send Reiki to you, however, you do not need to be physically (or virtually) present for the session. Your practitioner will invite you to spend time during your session relaxing or meditating, but the energy healing will take place regardless of what you’re doing during that time. Distance Reiki sessions are not delivered via Zoom or other internet platforms due to the potential for this to interfere with the session.

The Reiki Experience: Feel the Change

Because every person experiences Reiki in their own unique way and because your experience can change from session to session, it is best to come to each session with an open mind and minimal expectations. No matter what you experience during a session, you are getting the benefits of Reiki energy.

That being said, Reiki is generally described as being very comforting and relaxing. Some people may experience physical sensations of Reiki energy, such as temperature changes in their body or in the practitioner’s hands (hot or cold), subtle tingling, swaying, or pulsating sensations. You may experience a deep meditative state or even fall asleep during a session. When stagnant energy shifts or clears in the body, it’s possible to experience muscle twitching/movement, or the need to cough, yawn or cry. Try to relax into the experience and allow whatever needs to come out to come out.

You may also find that you don’t experience any sensations during a session, that your mind is very busy, or that your experience changes over time. This is all normal and again doesn’t change the fact that you are benefiting from the healing energy.

Reiki Healing Mississauga FAQs

Wear clothing that you are comfortable in, such as loose-fitting clothes or active wear. You will be asked to remove any bulky jewelry, watches, or other electronic devices. Hearing aids should also be removed prior to your session to avoid any interference during your treatment.

In-person Reiki sessions typically last for 30-60 minutes. This includes about 5 to 10 minutes for your practitioner to share impressions at the end of your session.

Distance Reiki sessions are 30 minutes due to the focused nature of the session. Any impressions are shared via email after your session unless otherwise requested.

After your session, your Reiki practitioner may share impressions about how the energy flowed during your session. The energy healing continues to work for 48 to 72 hours after a session, so it’s important to listen to your body and rest when needed, hydrate, and take good care of yourself.

How often you receive Reiki treatments is completely up to you. Your practitioner can assist you in finding a schedule or frequency that works depending on your goals or personal situation, but it’s ok to listen to your body and follow your own intuition when deciding how often to come for Reiki.
